Boys Varsity Cross Country · Dustin Horter Competes for Team USA

East CC and Track standout, senior Dustin Horter, was selected to run for Team USA at the 2018 simply Health Great Edinburgh XCountry Challenge.  The race was held at the historic Holyrood Park in Edinburgh, Scotland.  Team USA competed against teams from Europe and Great Britain.  The  race was a 6K which consisted of 4 laps around a 1.5k course.  Dustin said the course was very challenging given the terrain.  There were several creek crossings and a foot bridge crossing with water over the top of it.  The course itself was sloppy with a mix of rocks and grass.  Most of the runners for Team USA pitched their spikes afterward as many of the spikes were bent navigating the rocky course.  It was a typical damp and grey Scottish day around 40 degrees.  Dustin finished 13th overall in the combined JR division.  His final time was 20:11 for the 6K.  This was the first time he has gone the 6K distance.

Overall, Dustin said the experience was awesome.  He had a chance to compete with 4 of the other Midwest guys that he has become good friends with, Dylan Jacobs, Danny Kilrea, Clayton Mendez and Drew Bosley.  They all flew together from Chicago O’hare into Heathrow in London and then to Edinburgh.  Getting to socialize with the Professional team was also a good experience as it gave him a chance to talk to runners like Leonard Korir who won the Senior men’s race and Garrett Heath who has won this race 3 times.  Dustin said Garrett Heath was really approachable and gave him a lot of information about competing at the professional level.  One of the highlights was trading gear with the other athletes.  Dustin traded a Team USA shirt for one of the Great Britain shirts.  The athletes also got a kick out of giving things way to the little kids who were there watching.  Dustin said they especially wanted the Team USA stuff and continually hung around their tent. Dustin gave them a pair of gloves and one of his hats.
