Lakota East senior Carly Spletzer continued her quest to be the fastest cross country girl in the state of Ohio this past weekend. Spletzer outlasted the strongest Regional field in the state, to become the overall individual Champion in a 127-runner field, at the Regional 4 Regional Cross Country Championships at Hobart Arena in Troy, Ohio.
“It was a great feeling for sure, especially in such a great field,” Spletzer said. “I kind of came out and went for it. (Duncan) passed me coming through a mile and I tried to hang on as long as I could. I just got closer to her and we made one of the last turns and I got her. I just tried to maintain the lead.”
Spletzer’s race was a work of art as she pulled away from Lebanon senior Faith Duncan in the final half-mile of the race. Her time of 18:11.1 for the 5k (3.1 mile) course ties her own personal record and #2 time in Lakota East history, and that was accomplished on a course that was running 20-25 seconds slow on Saturday.
