East Boys Basketball found themselves in the “typical” kind of game they have been in all year….a GMC Dog fight. It was just another “lunch bucket” win for the Thunderhawk journeyman last Friday in front of a packed a raucous crowd back at Hamilton HS. The Sectional Final matchup was a redo of last season District Title game Princeton and the Hawks. This time the Thunderhawks got their revenge in a physical, back-and-forth affair, winning 52-43 to advance to the District Championship.
Senior star, Bash Wieland was the key all night for East, scoring seven points in the fourth quarter. His three-point play gave the Hawks a 43-34 lead with 2:53 left, and he followed it up with another strong drive to put East up 45-36 with less than two minutes left. Wieland was recently named First Team All-Southwest District
While Wieland was stealing the show, East had numerous other standouts, including Kaden Fuhrmann and Nate Johnson.
Fuhrmann nailed a big 3 at the end of the first half, and his trey midway through the fourth quarter was key to holding off the Vikings. Sophomore, Nate Johnson handled Princeton’s pressure all night, scoring nine points, pulling down five boards including a huge 3-point play in the fourth quarter.
The East defense played big also, outrebounding Princeton 26-14.
Second-seeded East (19-5) will return to the district finals at the University of Dayton Arena, facing either Wayne or Fairmont on Saturday, March 9. The starting time will be at 7:00 pm.
The winner of Saturday’s contest advances to the Regional Semi-Finals vs. either Moeller or Winton Woods on Wednesday, March 13 at Cintas Center, 6:15 pm.
