HAWKS REPAY BIG BLUE FOR ONLY GMC LOSS
The Lakota East Thunderhawks exacted a little revenge on Tuesday night at Hamilton, winning 47-40 and making it even sweeter by winning the programs 2nd outright GMC title and fourth overall. East is the 2018-19 GMC Champs with the result coming on the court of the only team to defeat them in league play this season.
This time the Hawks defense was up for the task not allowing Big Blue the offensive opportunities that did them in back on Jan. 11th (65-62). East was stellar on the boards with a 25-14 advantage (10-1 on offensive board). East got the win while scoring a season-low of only one three-point field goal on the night.
Senior Bash Wieland scored 17 points, Will Johnston had 10 and Grant Spicer added nine. Wieland (seven), Nate Johnson (six) and Spicer (five) were the rebounding leaders.
The score was 32-32 deadlock with under five minutes left, then East outscored Hamilton 15-8 the rest of the way. Nate Johnson’s dash and dunk midway thru the fourth quarter put an exclamation point on the Thunderhawks win.
East has now won outright GMC titles in 2018-19 and 2010-11. They shared the title in 2014-15 with Mason and 2004-05 with Princeton. East was the preseason coaches favorite to win the GMC.
The Hawks (16-5, 14-1) will close out the season at home on Friday when they host Sycamore. Seven East seniors will be recognized that evening for the outstanding contributions to Hawk Basketball. They are Nick Holtman, Deshawn Brown-Jackson, Colton Marsh, Stephen McKay, Bash Wieland, Will Johnston, and Grant Spicer.
Lakota East secured the #2 seed in the upcoming Sectional. The Hawks will open tourney play on Tuesday, Feb. 26th at Hamilton vs. the winner of the Kings/Little Miami contest. Game time is set for 6:00 pm.
