East boys basketball continues to turn away potential upset-minded teams. Friday was just another game where the opposing squad played well beyond their previous record.
For almost three quarters, before a packed house at Lakota West, the Firebirds made their case for a big win against their district rival. Once again the Hawks matched the Birds basket-for-basket, finally pulling away in the fourth quarter for a 71-41 victory.
The East win clinched at least a share of the GMC championship and extended the Hawks winning streak to six straight in the inter-district series.
One more win, either at Hamilton on Tuesday or at home against Sycamore next Friday, and the Thunderhawks clinch their second outright title in program history and first since the 2010-2011 season.
Of note, this season East leads the league in field-goal percentage, 3-point percentage, free-throw percentage, and assists
For the first time, this season four East players scored in double figures. Bash Wieland led his team scoring 20 (12 rebounds), Will Johnston scored 18 points, junior Kaden Fuhrmann finished with 15 and senior Grant Spicer added 11 for East (15-5, 13-1), which maintained at least a two-game lead over both Mason and Oak Hills with two regular-season games to play
East (15-5, 13-1) will look to avenge their only GMC loss of the season this Tuesday when they visit Hamilton.
Lakota East secured the #2 seed in the upcoming Sectional. The Hawks will open tourney play on Tuesday, Feb. 26th at Hamilton vs. the winner of the Kings/Little Miami contest. Game time is set for 6:00 pm.
