The Lakota East Girls Soccer team is relishing its role as the post-season underdog. The #14-seeded Thunderhawks knocked out the #2 seed Fairfield Indians in the D1 sectional final, on Tuesday night at Hamilton’s Virgil M. Schwarm Stadium.
The overtime match provided plenty of fast-paced action. Fairfield got on the board first in the first half and took the 1-0 lead to halftime. But the Hawks came out stronger in the second half with outstanding play from the defense and offense. With 22 minutes left in the game, Senior Kate Larbes buried a 25-yard direct kick from the far right side to equal the game at 1-1. Both teams continued the battle as time ran out and the game went to overtime.
Lakota East Senior Keeper Madison Hart played exceptionally throughout the match, saving nine of Fairfield’s 10 shots on goal. Her strong defense provided the incentive for the Hawks’ offense to make sure the outcome was nothing other than a win.
With about five minutes left in the overtime period, Sophomore Sophia Amaya scored the golden goal to give the Hawks the 2-1 victory and a ticket to the district championship game.
Next, up for #14 seed Lakota East (10-6-3) (4-4-1) is #5 seed Mt. Notre Dame on Saturday, October 27. The match will be played on the turf field at Walnut Hills High School at 7 p.m. East Girls Soccer won their only Southwest District Championship 13+ years ago in the 2004 season (2-0 over Lakota West).
The winner of Saturday’s game will advance to the Division 1 Sweet Sixteen (Regional Semi-Final) vs. the winner of the Lakota West/Beavercreek contest. That game is slated for Tuesday, Oct. 30th at Mason.
Come out on Saturday night and show your Eastside spirit!
