HAWKS DEFEAT AVES!
The boy’s soccer team opened up tournament play with a win Monday night at home against the Sycamore Aviators with a score of 3-2. The Hawks struck first with 6 minutes to play in the first half after a ball flicked on by a freshman, Connor Pletikapich, found junior teammate, Luke Birdsong, who fired a shot past the Sycamore keeper.
The Hawks would hold on to the lead until midway through the second half when the Aviators tied the score off an uncontested corner kick goal. The Hawks responded seven minutes later regaining the lead when a through ball by junior captain, Pepe Cortez, found the feet of Birdsong who scored his second goal of the match. With six minutes remaining in the match, Birdsong was fouled in the penalty box, awarding him with a penalty kick that he took himself and successfully completed, extending the Hawk’s lead to 3-1 and completing Birdsong’s hat trick on the night. Sycamore responded three minutes later cut the lead to 3-2. The Hawks would hold on for the remainder of the match.
East advances to the second round of the tournament where they’ll travel to Loveland to take on the 5th seeded Tigers Thursday night at7: 00 pm.
