Boys Varsity Golf · Boys Golf Returns to State for 3rd Consecutive Time!!!

The Lakota East Thunderhawk boy golf program continued to add to their legacy on Thursday at Beavercreek CC. The Hawks fought off tough conditions to snare a Division 1 District Championship and propel them to state for the third consecutive season. Senior Kyle Schmidt scorched the course with a 2-under par round of 70 to lead his team and earn medalist honors. Schmidt, a University of Dayton commit, was four shots better than everybody at the district on a brisk, windy day with very hard ground on the Beavercreek course.

Winner of the last five Greater Miami Conference crowns, East ruled the district with 312 strokes, edging GMC rival Mason (315) and St. Xavier (316) on the par-72 course. The top three teams and top three individuals not on a qualifying squad will compete at the state tournament next Friday and Saturday on the Ohio State University Scarlet Course in Columbus.

Freshman Ty Sylla (40-40—80) was second for the Thunderhawks, followed by juniors Peyton Houston (40-41—81) and Brock Aten (44-37—81), and freshman Joe Wilson (41-44—85).

The Wilson family will have two golfers at state next weekend. Joe’s sister Bree will be playing on the Gray Course with the East girls team who also qualified for state earlier in the week.

The Thunderhawks believe they have the game to grab the state championship. They finished sixth at state in 2017 and seventh in 2008 and 2016. The OHSAA State Championships are Friday, Oct. 19th and Saturday, Oct. 20th at The Ohio State University Gray Course.
