The Lakota East High boys golf “machine” continued their dominating championship ways on Thursday, winning the programs 9th overall league title and fifth in a row. The Hawks final team score of 574 is a GMC all-time record. Their team score on day two of 283 is an “under-par” total that may never be touched by another GMC school.
Lakota East senior Kyle Schmidt shot a 69 and 67 at Walden Ponds for a new all-time GMC low two-day score. Schmidt finished first overall, while Joe Wilson IV took second overall. Schmidt won Player of the Year for the third straight year. Other 2nd day scores:
Junior Peyton Houston fired a 69, freshman Joe Wilson a 71, freshman Ty Sylla a 76, junior Brock Allen a 78 and senior Shane Murphy an 81.
Aten, Houston, Schmidt, Sylla, and Wilson were all named First Team All-GMC. Shane Murphy earned 2nd team honors. Thunderhawk coach Jeff Combs received GMC Coach of the Year honors for the sixth time in his career.
“Great team camaraderie and hard workers,“ Combs said of his squad. “We have played an intense schedule and thrown in am workouts. The kids have really improved in the last couple of weeks. I am lucky to have such dedicated and driven young men.”
Mason took second, followed by Lakota West, Fairfield, Sycamore, Oak Hills, Colerain, Princeton, Hamilton, and Middletown.

Next up for the Thunderhawks is the OHSAA Sectional Championships at The Vineyard GC on Tuesday, Oct. 2nd. Division I Sectionals will qualify four (4) teams and the four (4) individual low scorers not on a qualifying team to the District Tournament at Beavercreek Golf Course, Thursday, October 11, 2018.
