Lakota East qualified 5 wrestlers for the USAW/Marines Cadet and Junior National Championships which were held in Fargo, ND this past July 15-22.  Wrestlers qualify for their respective State teams through State Tournaments and Regional Tournaments.  Jon Spaulding, Devon Davenport, Cristian Chavez, Jackson Leahy, and Hayden King all represented East on Team Ohio.  This is the largest and best high school wrestling tournament in the country.  Countless wrestlers from this tournament go on to become NCAA All-Americans, National Champions, and Olympians.  Jon Spaulding became Lakota East’s 4th Individual  All-American by placing 6th in the country in the 285 lb. weight class of the Junior Freestyle Championship.  Other East All-Americans have included Hetag Pliev, Tony Johnson, and Daniel Canfield.  Jon defeated Zaiser (MN) in round 1 by an 11-0 technical fall.  In round 2, he defeated McConkey (IA) by a 7-1 decision.  In round 3, Jon defeated Davidson (NJ) 3-1.  In the quarterfinal round, Jon lost to Metz (ND) 5-1.  Metz finished 2nd and is one of the top ranked heavyweights in the country.  With approximately 1:30 remaining in the match the score was tied at 1-1 and Spaulding was winning based on criteria, but was caught and thrown for 4 pts.  In the next round (the blood round in which the winner becomes an All-American), Spaulding defeated Costello (IA) 8-6.  Costello is a University of Iowa signee.  Jon then won by an 11-0 technical fall over Robinson (GA).  He then fell to Evans (TN) 6-3 in the match that would have put him in the top 4.  In the match for 5thplace, Jon fell to Emerson (MI) by a score of 5-1.

Devon Davenport went 2-2 in the 145 lb. division of the Junior Freestyle Tournament.  Devon’s run consisted of a 4-0 win over Hodge (TN), a 12-2 loss to Wichman (WI), a 10-0 win over Schwartz (WA), and a 7-2 loss to Gamez (TX).  Cristian Chavez went 0-2 in the 120 lb. division of the Junior Freestyle Tournament.  In the first round, Cristian lost a 12-10 decision to Hunt (WI).  This was a very controversial loss based on a quick whistle by the referee after a coaches challenge that would not be overturned.  Hunt ended up losing to the eventual champion by 2 pts. in a later round.  Chavez then lost to Schmidt (NE) 10-0.  Jackson Leahy went 1-2 in the 138 lb. division of the Cadet Freestyle Tournament.  Jackson came out strong in his first national tournament with a 14-4 technical fall over Hristov (NV).  He then fell to Roybal (MD) 18-7.  In his final match, Leahy lost to Hanson (IA) 12-2.  Hayden King competed in the 152 lb. division of the Cadet Greco Roman Tournament and went 2-2.  Hayden’s run included a 12-1 loss to Salazar (CO), a 14-4 win over Mashek (IA), a 10-0 win over De La Cruz (OR), and a 10-2 loss to Eggleston (NY).
