The top of the state championship podium is becoming a familiar spot for Lakota East running phenom, junior Dustin Horter.  Horter continues to etch his name on a list of the Lakota all-time running greats, racing to another State Title  in Columbus last week, winning the 1600 meter event at OSU’s Jesse Owens Stadium.

Horter, who entered as the top seed with the seventh-fastest time in the nation led the entire race until that last 200 put his victory in jeopardy as Worthington’s Arjun Jha ran a 59.2-second final lap to make his push for first. Horter  though wouldn’t be denied this year and sprinted past Jha with about 50 meters to go, finishing with a time of 4:08.38, while Jha settled for second in 4:09.09.

Horter planned to run the 3200m at the OHSAA State Track Championships as well.  He was the predicted favorite as the District and Regional Champion in this event and still holds the #1 time in Ohio in the 3200 (8:56.62).  However, the extreme heat and closeness time wise of the races (87 degrees, around 100 degrees on the track, less than an hour between races) precluded a run at this title. Olentangy’s Hunter Moore went on to win the 3200 event  with a time of 8:58. Dustin plans to try again next year in hopefully more conducive conditions.

This 1600m Championship win marks Dustin’s third State Championship this year.  He was also the OHSAA Division 1 State Champion in XC with a PR of 14:59.90, the State Indoor Track 1600m Champion with a PR of 4:10.77, and now has claimed the 1600m Outdoor title.  Dustin’s next venture is the Mile run at the prestigious Brooks PR Invitational in Seattle, Washington on June 17.

Lakota East Girls Track state qualifiers also had tremendous accomplishments at their State Meet.  See a recap and highlights of all the Regional and State Boys and Girls Track action below.
