Pending Board approval, the Lakota East Athletic Department has hired Larry Sykes as the new Head Girls Basketball Coach at Lakota East High School. Sykes, an assistant coach at Lakota East the past two seasons, replaces Nikki Drew, who resigned at the end of last season.

“Coach Sykes has been instrumental in the girls basketball program at all levels the past two seasons and we are pleased to have him step up as head coach,” said Lakota Athletic Director Richard Bryant.

To lead the Thunderhawks, Coach Sykes will draw upon his collegiate career at Xavier University, where he was a player from 1991-1995, his NBA career and his extensive coaching career. Before coming to Lakota East, he was head coach at Purcell Marian.

Last season, the Lady Thunderhawks finished 13-11 and 6-8 in the Greater Miami Conference, more wins than any other season in the history of the program.
